Denise Doring VanBuren will chair the Dutchess-Ulster Go Red For Women Luncheon, set for Friday, Nov. 8, at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie. VanBuren served as Chair in 2013 and has supported the event over the years through the BetterU Challenge, sponsored by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation.
“I am deeply committed to the Heart Association’s mission to improve heart health, especially for women, who too often consider heart disease something that affects only men,” said VanBuren, vice president of public relations at Central Hudson. “It’s very personal to me. My mother suffered a debilitating stroke due to blocked arteries, though she never smoked. I am passionate about raising awareness for heart-related diseases among all women in our community.”
At Central Hudson, VanBuren is responsible for public relations, communications and social media, and serves as corporate spokesperson. VanBuren administers Central Hudson’s community relations for corporate social responsibility programs, including the BetterU Challenge. She currently serves on the Boards of Directors for Boscobel, MidHudson Regional Hospital of Westchester Medical Center, Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Fishkill Rural Cemetery and the Hudson River Valley Institute at Marist College. A long-time member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, she was recently elected its volunteer President General for a term 2019-2022.
VanBuren will lead fundraising and outreach for the Go Red For Women Luncheon event on Nov. 8. It includes a health and wellness expo, morning educational sessions, keynote speaker Mara Schiavocampo and a PURSEonality auction featuring sophisticated handbags, wallets and more. This year’s participants in the BetterU Challenge, sponsored by Central Hudson, will be celebrated at the event. The women are blogging about their healthy lifestyle challenge experience at https://hudsonvalleyny.heart.org.
“I hope that everyone will leave the Go Red for Women Luncheon knowing that even small steps toward improved heart health can make a big difference in their quality of life,” VanBuren said. “Simply walking a few extra miles a week, for example, can have terrific benefit to your longevity, sleep patterns and overall mood. We can improve outcomes for local women impacted by heart disease – come help us raise the funds necessary to do so.
“We are fortunate to have Denise chair this year’s Go Red for Women Luncheon,” said Melissa Hanigan, chair of the American Heart Association and Manager of Patient Registration/ Office Manager of Specialty Service at Ellenville Regional Hospital. “She has been part of the BetterU challenge for the past 10 years, helping more than 100 women to make drastic improvements to their heart health. Her leadership of the Go Red for Women Luncheon means that even more women in our community will have a chance to improve their heart health.”
